He obtained a music scholarship to Miami Dade Community College in 1982, where he also studied computer science. At the same time, he began training in stage combat and swordplay with The Royal Chessmen, a company who presented living chessgames at local fairs. Later, he joined The Knights Arrant, a jousting ensemble, and Ring of Steel, a small troupe that staged sword fights at a local amusement park called Pirates. During this period, he met Matthew Gratzner and Shannon Gans, the founders of New Deal Studios in Los Angeles. He relocated to Orlando, Florida, in 1985. Chapin supported himself in college at the University of Central Florida by doing sword battles at a neighbourhood pub, dinner theater known as Shakespeare’s Taevern. In 1986, Chapin’s father died, but he continued his college until he graduated in 1987. Also at this time, he continued to take drama classes and choreographed sword fights for Romeo and Juliet.

Chapin relocated to Los Angeles and worked as a swordsman in films such as Hook and Army of Darkness. Bob Chapin’s mother died in 1991, two years before his first picture, Ring of Steel, which was distributed by MCA Universal. Chapin went on to star in other action films throughout the years, while also working as an actor, stuntman, and fight coordinator. During this period, he also established a career as a visual effects artist, utilising his computer science talents and knowledge.He began his career at Pacific Data Images in Los Angeles before moving on to other companies. Chapin has also worked on critically and popularly acclaimed films such as X-Men, Fantastic Four, Armageddon, and American Beauty.

He also directed many independent films before joining New Deal Studios as an in-house visual effects supervisor. Chapin maintained his acting and sword fighting abilities at all times. He trained for years with the infamous acting coach Larry Moss and was certified in six weapons as an actor-combatant in 1995 at the First International Stage Combat Workshop in London, England, with the Societies of American, British, and Canadian Fight Directors. He co-created The Hunted with writer/actor Andrew Helm in 2001. The Hunted is one of the most popular web series on the internet.
