His career in broadcasting started when he was fifteen years old, doing on-air work for the Coventry, Rhode Island, high school radio station. At the age of sixteen, Bestwick started calling auto races at Seekonk Speedway, where his father was a racer. Charlie Roberts, the creator of MotorNet in New Jersey, then appointed him to serve as Associate Producer and Director of Affiliates for the radio network. Bestwick began working for Motor Racing Network (MRN) in 1985 as a racing reporter. He later rose to the position of co-lead announcer alongside Joe Moore and Barney Hall. Bestwick replaced Ken Squier as TBS’s primary NASCAR analyst for its shortened schedule while he was still working at MRN.

Bestwick joined NBC in 1999 as a lap-by-lap commentator for the network’s only race, the Pennzoil 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. When NBC purchased the rights to the second half of the NASCAR season, Bestwick joined Benny Parsons and Wally Dallenbach Jr. on the network’s full-time broadcast team. Bestwick also continued to work for Turner Sports, which functioned as NBC’s cable broadcast partner. In 2005, Bestwick and Bill Weber traded roles on the show. Bestwick took over as lead pit reporter from Weber, who had replaced Bestwick for two races in 2004 while recovering from a broken leg. Weber went to the booth. From 2005 to 2006, Bestwick replaced Weber in stand-alone Busch Series races.

Although TNT retained its NASCAR rights in the new contract that was signed, Bestwick chose not to stay with them and instead signed on with ESPN. Bestwick also made a brief cameo appearance as himself, playing the lead announcer, in the 2005 film Herbie: Fully Loaded. During his time at NBC, Bestwick also called Arena football games and performed other small-time duties. Bestwick left the network after seven years.

Bestwick announced on April 28, 2017, that he will be calling his final Indianapolis 500 and that he would be let go by ESPN following the 2017 IndyCar doubleheader Detroit Grand Prix. But ESPN revealed in February 2018 that Bestwick would return to broadcast the Indianapolis 500 in 2018. ESPN and the Superstar Racing Experience inked a broadcast agreement in 2023 for the 2023 season, with Allen Bestwick serving as the play-by-play announcer once again. [Bestwick will start working as a play-by-play commentator for CBS’s Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) racing series in 2021, it was announced on April 14, 2021. Bestwick worked as a PA for IMS in May of that same year as well.
