The focus of Durham’s debut book, Gabriel’s Story, was African American pioneers in the American West. A escaped slave was the subject of Walk Through Darkness, which was set in the tense period just before the American Civil War. The main subject of Pride of Carthage was the Roman Republic’s conflict with Ancient Carthage’s Hannibal Barca. His books have been translated into eight other languages, twice been named New York Times Notable Books, and honored with two honors from the American Library Association. Three feature-length projects are in development: Gabriel’s Story, Walk Through Darkness, and Acacia: The War with the Mein. His epic fantasy Acacia Trilogy is completed with a third book, Acacia: The Sacred Band. Durham made a comeback to historical fiction in 2016 with the release of The Risen: A Novel of Spartacus.

He has experience working as a kayak instructor, whitewater raft guide, and Outward Bound instructor. He taught at the University of Maryland and the University of Massachusetts Amherst after earning an MFA from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1996. In addition to being an adjunct professor at Hampshire College and an associate professor at Cal State University, Fresno, he held the MacLean Distinguished Visiting Writer position at The Colorado College. The John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer was given to him in 2009. Before departing to write for television, he was an assistant professor of creative writing at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he is currently an instructor for the Stonecoast MFA Program in Creative Writing.
