Fisher joined the United States Navy to avoid homelessness. Fisher served in the Navy for 12 years until leaving the service in 1989. He met Lt. Commander Williams, a psychotherapist who helped him deal with his personal traumas. Fisher began working as a federal correctional officer after being discharged from the Navy. After three years at the Bureau of Prisons, he started working as a security guard for Sony Pictures. Fisher made the decision to seek for his true family members there. He phoned Annette Elkins, who turned out to be his Aunt. Fisher met his entire family, including his mother Eva Mae, within a few months of making contact. Fisher has written and directed other films, including a documentary, This Life of Mine: The Story of Leon T. Garr, a short film, “My Summer Friend”, starring Michael T. Williams, and was a co-writer of the 2006 American drama ATL.

Fisher wrote the script. Narratives about Fisher’s life started circulating within the Sony campus, and numerous Hollywood talent swarmed to work on the project. He originally rebuffed all offers.
