He began his career as an off-Broadway actor and television guest performer. Hawkins appeared briefly in Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 before starring opposite Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore in Universal Pictures’ action film Non-Stop. In 2013, Hawkins made his Broadway debut as Tybalt in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet revival. The Hollywood Reporter reported in 2015 that Hawkins would join the cast of AMC’s The Walking Dead as Heath, a crucial character in Robert Kirkman’s comic book. Hawkins starred as Dr. Dre in Universal Pictures’ biopic Straight Outta Compton, which opened in theaters on August 14, 2015 and grossed $201 million.
Hawkins began playing the lead in Fox’s revival of 24: Legacy in 2017. That same year, he co-starred in Kong: Skull Island with Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tom Hiddleston. Hawkins appeared in the play Six Degrees of Separation, opposite Allison Janney and John Benjamin Hickey, for a short engagement on Broadway in spring 2017. He was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. Hawkins sang “God Bless America” during the men’s singles final at the 2017 US Open.
