Paul, a student who has a history of bedwetting, is plagued by apocalyptic nightmares. He can see the Fades, or spirits of the dead, all around him. The Fades cannot be seen, smelled, heard, or touched by other humans; they are the remains of people who died but were unable to ascend because the ascension points on Earth have been closing, and only a few people can pass through the ones that are still open.

As a result, the Fades who remained on Earth became enraged and vengeful toward the human race, and they devised a way to become partially human again and regain control of touch in the real world. They are unseen in the world except by a select few, known as “Angelics,” who have the ability to perceive the Fades. Paul is drawn into a conflict between the Angelics and the Fades, attempting to keep the Fades from regaining physical form and annihilating the human race.
