Welch had her first significant acting role in the independent film Jumping Off Bridges, directed by Kat Candler, in 2005. She went on to appear in more high-profile films, including Richard Linklater’s drama Boyhood. She also appeared in Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, which he wrote and directed. She would reunite with Malick in 2017’s Song to Song. Welch appeared in two films with her band The Trishas in 2013. The Trishas served as her backup band and contributed to the soundtrack for her role in Billy Bates. Angels Sing also featured the Trishas as a band. In 2018, Welch portrayed ex-Marine Dawn.
While undergoing physical therapy, her character meets Alex Caulder (Kyle Schmid), one of the main characters of the Navy SEAL Team.
