After a brief stint as a copyboy for the Adelaide News, Roberts started his career at Perth radio station 6PM. After that, Roberts spent two years traveling extensively throughout Europe before returning to Australia and working as an announcer for Radio 3CS Colac. He became a newscaster at the Bendigo-based television station BCV8-TV in 1971. He then worked as a general announcer and presenter for the Seven Network in Adelaide in 1973.

Roberts moved to Melbourne to work for the Seven Network in Melbourne after being asked to be one of the commentators for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. Roberts was a commentator for more than 700 Australian Football League (AFL) games while working for the Seven Network. Roberts also provided commentary on numerous major golf tournaments, including the Australian Open, the Spring Racing Carnival, and NBL games. He has also covered numerous Winter Olympic Games and every Summer Olympic Games from Moscow 1980 to Beijing 2008, including Sydney 2000.

Roberts was the host of the Bathurst 1000 coverage four times for the Seven Network: in 1991, 1993, 1994 and the 1997 Super Visiting 1000. Roberts, along with Dennis Cometti, was a commentator for the famous 1993 AFL match between Sydney and St Kilda, in which a Sydney player released a pig with the number 4 and the nickname “Pluga” spray-painted on it (in reference to Tony Lockett, a player for St Kilda at the time). Roberts’ account of the incident, in which he exclaimed, ” “A pig is in full-forward!”

Roberts joined Seven News Melbourne in January 2005 after Beverley O’Connor left. Roberts also hosted the game shows It’s Academic and The $1,000,000 Chance of a Lifetime and contributed annually to Seven’s Good Friday Appeal telecast. Despite his impressive resume, Roberts is often remembered for introducing Miss Australia 1981 as “Leanne Cock” at a Mount Gambier Cup meeting.
