He has been a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty and the staff of Massachusetts General Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, and a biomedical research center in Boston, Massachusetts, for many years. Johnson began his television career at WRGB-TV in Schenectady, NY in the 1970s while working at Albany Medical Center. In 1972, he relocated to Boston and became a charter staffer at newly-signed-on WCVB-Channel 5’s Sunday Open House, where he conducted live, weekly interviews with other medical professionals regarding current medical topics. He also hosted “House Call,” a half-hour weekly series in which he answered viewers’ health-related queries and interviewed doctors and nurses on a variety of health topics. The show was well-liked and earned WCVB-TV an Emmy.

From 1982 to 1984, he hosted HealthBeat, a national health TV magazine program. On November 3, 1975, he joined ABC News as a medical reporter and eventually became the “Medical Editor” of Good Morning America (GMA), ABC News’ morning news-and-talk program. He has reported for ABC News for nearly three decades, including World News Tonight, a daily evening news show; Nightline, a late-night hard and soft news program; and 20/20, a prime-time television newsmagazine program. Dr. Jennifer Ashton is now the Chief Medical Editor for ABC News, although Johnson remains a correspondent. Typically, but not always, Ashton writes on improvements in nutrition and children, whereas Johnson concentrates on senior health issues. Johnson continues as a Pastor in the Evangelical Covenant Church.
