After graduating from USC in 1982, Cundieff practiced stand-up comedy in Los Angeles while looking for acting possibilities. His first notable job came in 1985, when he played Theo Carver on Days of Our Lives for a year. He starred as Big Brother Chucky in Spike Lee’s 1988 film School Daze. Cundieff’s experience working with Lee on the film prompted him to explore writing and directing as well as acting, and at the age of 29, he wrote, directed, and performed in the highly-received 1993 rap satire Fear of a Black Hat. He directed and co-wrote Tales from the Hood, a horror anthology released in 1995. He directed sequels Tales from the Hood 2 and Tales from the Hood 3 in 2018 and 2020, which he said he had been working on for 20 years but that the success of Get Out had made possible. Cundieff Cundieff joined Alpha Phi Alpha, a historically African American fraternity, while attending USC. He also worked as a journalist for Michael Moore’s comic TV magazine show TV Nation in the mid-1990s. He got a Razzie Award for Worst Director in 2013, along with 12 other nominees, for directing a section in the anthology comedy film Movie 43.
