In 1982, Henton worked in a paint warehouse during the day and studied computers in the evenings. He opted to participate in an amateur night at a Cleveland comedy club. Henton won the amateur night tournament with his second performance. Henton spent a few years performing stand-up comedy in the Cleveland area. He took his humor on tour for a year and won the 1991 Johnny Walker National humor Search. Jim McCawley, the comedy executive for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, spotted Henton and booked him to perform on the show on June 5, 1991. As Henton completed his set, he glanced to Carson for approval. Carson, Ed McMahon, and special guest Tony Bennett all waved at Henton.
Henton answered he didn’t, and Carson replied, “Well, you will after tonight.”Henton appeared on Comic Strip Live ten days later, and he was scheduled for a second appearance on The Tonight Show on October 11. Henton’s comedy special, John Henton: Comedy with an Attitude, premiered on Showtime in January 1993. Henton plays Overton Wakefield Jones on Fox’s series Living Single. He also portrayed Milsap Morris in the ABC/UPN sitcom The Hughleys. Henton has been in several sitcoms, including One on One, The Parkers, For Your Love, Hannah Montana, and Love That Girl!.
