Johnson’s first US television debut was as a participant on the game show Card Sharks, which aired on June 5, 1979, under the name Anne Johnson. She appeared on the game program Child’s Play with her full name, as well as a pilot episode of Body Language as Anne Marie Johnson, in which she characterized herself as a “struggling actress”. Johnson’s career began in the 1970s with appearances on the Australian series Homicide and Matlock Police. In 1984, she appeared as Aileen Lewis on the short-lived NBC comedy series Double Trouble while also having a recurring role on the NBC police drama Hill Street Blues.
She portrayed Raj’s wife, Nadine Hudson Thomas, on the syndicated sitcom What’s Happening Now!! from 1985 until 1988. Johnson began her role as Althea Tibbs in the NBC/CBS police drama series In the Heat of the Night in 1988 and stayed with the show until 1993. While appearing on In the Heat of the Night, Johnson recorded the song “Little Drummer Boy” for the 1991 cast Christmas CD Christmas Time’s A Comin’. The Marksmen Quartet, a country gospel quartet, provided backing vocals. Randall Franks and Alan Autry, who costarred in the film, produced the song. She also acted in other films, including Robot Jox (1989), which contained her sole professional nude scene, The Five Heartbeats (1991), True Identity (1991), and Strictly Business.
Johnson joined the cast of Fox’s sketch comedy series In Living Color for its last season. She played Alycia Barnett on Fox’s prime-time soap drama Melrose Place from 1995 to 1996.From 1997 until 2002, she appeared in the CBS series JAG as Representative Bobbi Latham. She has also had guest appearances on various TV shows, such as Living Single, Murder, She Wrote, Leverage, Ally McBeal, Girlfriends, The Parkers, Dharma & Greg, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, NCIS, Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, and Grey’s Anatomy. In 2020, she had recurring parts in the Oprah Winfrey Network drama Cherish the Day and the ABC legal thriller How to Get Away with Murder. Johnson was elected first national vice president of the Screen Actors Guild in 2008. She ran for president of the actors’ union in 2009 on the Membership First ticket, but she lost to eventual winner Ken Howard.
