Dancer came to the southern Oregon Coast after college and worked as a reporter for KCBY in Coquille and Coos Bay. In 1987, Dancer relocated to Eugene, Oregon, and began working as a television reporter for KVAL-TV. After a few years, he moved to KEZI, Eugene’s ABC station, and worked as a reporter before becoming an anchor a year later. He was one of the first reporters to arrive at Thurston High School in Springfield after Kip Kinkel’s shooting spree in 1998. While covering the topic, he began to cry on camera, which irritated him but led to extra interviews with students since they believed he cared about them.
The day after leaving television, he officially launched his Republican candidature for Oregon Secretary of State. He ran unchallenged in the primary and then faced Democratic state senator Kate Brown in the general election. During his candidature, he advocated for the Secretary of State office to be made nonpartisan, and he also backed Ballot Measure 65, which would have established an open primary system. He ran on the concept of being an outsider who had never held public office before, whereas Brown emphasized her experience in government.[8 Dancer is a member of a group of filmmakers who began work on a documentary film about former U.S. Senator Mark O. Hatfield in 2010.
