As The Washington Post’s main Maryland correspondent, he was one of two reporters to break the story of former Vice President Spiro Agnew’s probe. He formerly covered national politics, city hall, and education.
In 1976, he started writing a local column that appeared on the top page of The Washington Post Metro section. Its success, as well as the attention of newspaper editors across the country, prompted The Washington Post Writers Group to syndicate it nationally in 1981. He worked as a copywriter for The New York Herald Tribune and a reporter for United Press International in New York.
