Lui’s interest in politics began in the 1970s, when he debated California’s contentious Proposition 13 on school buses. That interest led to a position as campaign manager for San Francisco College Board incumbent Alan Wong at 19:campaign. Lui returned to college after the election and planned to write about policy and state affairs, subscribing to The Washington Post when it had to be mailed to the West Coast.

Lui hosted the APIAVote Presidential Debate, the APA Presidential Inaugural Ball, and an APA Congressional Caucus forum at the Capitol during the 2012 election cycle. He also led training sessions for elected and appointed officials through the Asian Pacific American Institute on Congressional Studies.
