Rachel True Career

She made her acting debut in 1991, with a few episodes of the long-running ‘NBC’ sitcom ‘The Cosby Show.’ She played a friend of ‘Theo,’ played by Malcolm-Jamal Warner. She relocated to Los Angeles in 1993 and began her professional acting career with regular TV appearances on ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ (1993) and ‘HBO’s Dream On’ (1994-1995). Her first notable film role was in the rap spoof ‘CB4’ (1993), opposite Chris Rock. next starring role was in ‘Embrace of the Vampire’ (1995), opposite Alyssa Milano, followed by what turned out to be the biggest film of her career, reinforcing her niche in the occult genre, the widely acclaimed teenage witch film ‘The Craft’ (1996), alongside Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney, and Neve Campbell.

She then appeared in the 1997 television series ‘Boston Common.’ Her critically acclaimed performance as ‘Mel’ in Gregg Araki’s independent film ‘Nowhere,’ the third episode of his ‘Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy,’ further helped her career. True returned to commercial cinema in 1998 with the stoner picture ‘Half Baked’, opposite comedian Dave Chappelle, followed by more regular TV appearances on ‘The Drew Carey Show’ (1997-1998) and ‘Once and Again’ (1999-2000). After that, she appeared in several insignificant films, the only two of which are worth mentioning: Greg Harrison’s ‘Groove’ (2000) and Taye Diggs’ ‘New Best Friend’ 2002. She eventually landed the part of ‘Mona Thorne’ on the ‘UPN’ sitcom ‘Half & Half,’ alongside Essence Atkins. The show aired till 2006.

Her “good friend,” two-time ‘Primetime Emmy’-winning actor, writer, producer, and comic Kathy Griffin, was responsible for her appearance in numerous episodes of Griffin’s reality show, ‘Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.’
After ‘Half & Half,’ True starred in a few mediocre Black ethnocentric and multi-racial films including ‘The Perfect Holiday’ and ‘Divas’, followed by a decade of scant TV work and minor roles in movies and telefilms. She has also performed several voice roles. True has recently directed various low-budget independent films, including ‘Limelight’ and ‘Good Grief’.
