In 1981, he was hired as a television journalist by San Juan, Puerto Rico’s WAPA-TV channel 4, becoming the first black Puerto Rican to work as a TV reporter. During his 32-year career as a TV journalist, he received over 100 awards from various organizations in Puerto Rico and the United States, including awards for hurricane coverage and investigative reports like Red Alert 1 and 2, in which he uncovered the military use of Vieques Island and the effects of army maneuvers on the population.
In 2017, he hosted Noticentro’s 5 p.m. newscast. Noticentro Al Amanecer (Noticentro In the Morning) celebrated its eighteenth year on the air in 2018. Rosa Nales filed a $2.5 million dollar lawsuit against WAPA-TV in December 2020, alleging that he was ignored in favor of White colleagues when the network decided to install Rafael Lenin Lopez as the main afternoon news reporter instead of him due to Rosa Nales’ race and age. When memes of Rosa Nales in martial arts poses were discovered on the internet, he gladly revealed to the public that he has been practicing martial arts for over 47 years.
