Jones was born in Manhattan, New York City, to American concert promoter Sue Jones and Indian Bengali musician Ravi Shankar. Jones was raised in Grapevine, Texas, by her mother after her parents separated in 1986. Jones started singing in church as a child and later studied piano and voice. Jones visited New Delhi to spend time with her father, Ravi Shankar, after they had grown apart. It was during this time that she penned some of the material that would be recorded on the album The Fall.

She attended Grapevine Middle School and Grapevine High School before moving on to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas.
