He earned a summa cum laude degree from San Francisco State University. Galanos was the local sports anchor on KTVN-TV in Reno, Nevada from 1991 to 1994, with Ric Renner serving as the weekend anchor, and he was well-known for his extensive knowledge of sports in northern Nevada. In the late 1980s, he worked as a news cameraman, teleprompter operator, and video journalist for CNN Headline News, reporting for anchors Don Harrison and Bobbie Battista. He then relocated to Reno, Nevada, where he worked as an on-air sports analyst and reporter for KOLO television.
After leaving Reno, he rose through the ranks to become an anchor for CNN Sports Illustrated, but Galanos eventually joined CNN Headline News as a general assignment news anchor. He previously co-anchored Prime News with Erica Hill before Hill was designated sole anchor. In early 2008, Hill was relocated to CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, while Galanos returned as her successor.
