In 1984, WSAZ, NBC’s station in Charleston, West Virginia, hired Gargiulo to host the local edition of the syndicated show PM Magazine. He later worked as a reporter and anchor for WYOU, a CBS affiliate in Scranton, PA. In the early 1990s, he worked as a reporter for WLKY in Louisville, Kentucky, which was then an ABC affiliate and is now owned by CBS. From 1993 until 1997, he worked as a reporter and anchor for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis. He worked as a Washington, D.C. correspondent for Hearst-Argyle Television from 1997 to 2000, and then as the morning news anchor for WTTG, a Fox-owned station in Washington, from 2000 to 2006. Gargiulo began working as a general assignment reporter for WNBC in July 2006 before becoming the anchor of Weekend Today in New York.

As an anchor at WNBC, he has led coverage of many major news events, including Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the United States, the commissioning of the USS New York, President Barack Obama’s visit to Ground Zero following the death of Osama bin Laden, Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, the New York Giants’ ticker-tape parade.

In 2014, he traveled to eastern Afghanistan to chronicle the final deployment of a regiment from the US Army’s 10th Mountain Division. He reported on the same division in Iraq in 2007 and has previously reported from Kuwait and Iraq.

Gargiulo has occasionally featured on Nickelodeon’s Team Umizoomi, as a reporter.Gargiulo received an Emmy Award for breaking news coverage in 2009 for his reporting on a crane collapse on the Upper East Side. In 2010, he and Erika Tarantal won an Emmy for the best morning newscast for Today in NYC. He won another Emmy for breaking news in 2013, and in 2014, he and his WNBC colleagues won an Emmy for Outstanding Regional News Story-Spot News for their coverage of Hurricane Sandy.
