Roache was born and raised in Manchester, England, the son of English actor William Roache and his first wife, Anna Cropper. He is the family’s eldest of five siblings. Venya, his sister, died in 2018 at the age of 50. Verity Elizabeth, born in 1981, and Edwina, born in 1982, were his half-sisters. Edwina died tragically when she was only 18 months old. Roache also has a half-brother, William James, who was born in 1986.

Roache first appeared on Coronation Street in 1975 as Peter Barlow, the son of his father’s character Ken Barlow. Roache has also performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the past. Roache began a film career in the 1990s while continuing to work in television and on stage. In 1994, he played the lead in Antonia Bird’s Priest. In 1997, he co-starred in The Wings of the Dove with Helena Bonham Carter. He won the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Actor in 2001 for his performance as Samuel Taylor Coleridge in Julien Temple’s film Pandaemonium, which he co-wrote with Samantha Morton. In Batman Begins, he played Thomas Wayne, Batman’s father, in 2005. He portrayed Executive Assistant District Attorney Michael Cutter on television.

In June 2010, it was announced that he would return to Coronation Street to play Laurence Cunningham alongside his father, William Roache. He was cast in the HBO pilot The Miraculous Year in July 2010. In April 2011, Roache was cast as the lead in the ITV miniseries Titanic, which will air in March and April 2012 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking. Roache made his television debut as Ecbert, King of Wessex in season two of Vikings in February 2014. From 2017 to 2019, he played David Wellington in Seasons 7 and 8 of the television series Homeland.
