Brooks’ early work included modeling for Calvin Klein underwear. Brooks portrayed Matthew Applewhite on the ABC TV drama Desperate Housewives from 2005 to 2006. He played Harry Flournoy, an athlete at Texas Western University when the five starting black players beat Kentucky for the national championship, in the film Glory Road. He made an appearance in the 2007 film In the Valley of Elah. In 2008, he co-starred as Tia Mowry’s boyfriend, Jerome, on the TV show The Game. He made an appearance on FOX’s Dollhouse in 2009. Brooks portrayed Benedict “Eggs” Talley in HBO’s True Blood’s second season. He began his role as attorney Malcolm Bennet in the now-canceled ABC series The Deep End in January 2010.
Brooks starred in the ABC documentary-style dramedy My Generation, which premiered in the fall of 2010. After only two episodes, the show was canceled. He appeared in the USA Network series Necessary Roughness, which premiered on June 29, 2011. Brooks played Terrence “TK” King, a football player for the New York Hawks whose anger issues require him to see a therapist. Necessary Roughness was canceled in 2013. Brooks appeared as Prince Miller, a basketball superstar who was molested as a child by his coach, in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and as a bomb disposal expert in an episode of J. Brooks was a series regular on the CBS/The CW drama Supergirl from the series premiere until his departure in the fourth episode of the fifth season. He released his debut single “Tears Away” on October 20, 2017. He was cast as Jax Briggs in the Mortal Kombat reboot, which will be released on April 23, 2021. Brooks announced in June 2022 that he would be joining the cast of the long-running crime series Law & Order as a detective in season 22.
