Hugh Dancy is an English actor best known for his portrayal of David Copperfield in the television film adaptation of David Copperfield. Dancy’s acting career began in the most unexpected way. He was sent to his school’s theatre as a punishment for misbehavior when he was 13 years old. This brief encounter with acting sparked a lifelong interest in him, which quickly developed into a passion and, eventually, a profession.

Dancy moved to London after graduation, where a chance meeting in a cafe led to him meeting casting director Ros Hubbard and agent Dallas Smith, who signed him. Dancy appeared in the second series of Cold Feet as Danny, who had a brief romance with Rachel, one of the show’s main characters, in 1999. Dancy portrayed Daniel Deronda in the BBC adaptation of George Eliot’s novel Daniel Deronda in 2002. Dancy’s notable film roles include Prince Charmont in the 2004 Disney film Ella Enchanted alongside Anne Hathaway and Galahad in King Arthur the same year alongside later Hannibal co-star Mads Mikkelsen. Adam, an independent film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005, starred him as Adam Raki.

Dancy has appeared in MCC Theater’s The Pride, written by Alexi Kaye Campbell, at New York City’s Lucille Lortel Theatre. Joe Mantello directed the off-Broadway production, which starred Ben Whishaw and Andrea Riseborough. Dancy made his Broadway debut as Captain Dennis Stanhope in Journey’s End (Belasco Theatre) in 2007. From 2016 to 2018, he starred in Hulu’s The Path as Cal Roberts, a lead character alongside Aaron Paul and Michelle Monaghan. Dancy was announced as one of the leads in NBC’s 2022 revival of Law & Order, playing an assistant district attorney, in November 2021.
