Diaz attended Hart High School before heading to San Luis Obispo, California, to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at California Polytechnic State University. Her first television employment was at KSBY in San Luis Obispo, then at KFSN in Fresno. In 1983, she returned to Southern California to work as a reporter for KABC-Orange TV’s County bureau. As a reporter for KABC-TV, she covered big topics such as the 1986 Los Angeles Central Library Fire, the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, and the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

She started as a weekend anchor in 1985, and three years later, she became the anchor of KABC-daily TV’s evening newscast at 6 p.m. She was promoted to anchor for the station’s 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts in 1997. With this elevation, she became the first female Hispanic lead anchor at a Los Angeles English-language television station.

Diaz began her career at KCBS-TV in September 2002 as a co-anchor of the CBS 2 News at 5 and 11 p.m. with Harold Greene, and she was joined by Paul Magers as a co-anchor in 2004. Diaz was also one of the founding hosts of KABC-Vista TV’s L.A., one of the earliest public affairs programs in Southern California to cater to the region’s English-speaking Latino population. While she was co-hosting the show, it earned the prized Imagen Award twice. Three local Emmy Awards were also given to her work on Vista L.A. Diaz earned a third Imagen award in August 2011 when “Eye on Our Community” was named Best Local Informational Program. In May 2012, she began co-hosting the FOX L.A. weekend news broadcasts with FOX news anchor Susan Hirasuna.

Diaz is a three-time Imagen Award winner and has won an Emmy Award. Diaz and her crew won the Imagen Award for Best Local Informational Program in August 2011. This was the first special under the CBS2 “Eye on Our Community” title to be produced and shown. In June 2005, she landed the first in-depth televised interview with incoming Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa. Diaz won a national Imagen award in 2006 for her work on that subject, which she produced and reported.
