During his ninth-grade year, he was elected class president, and one of his teachers, Eligio Armstrong, noticed Rivera Nieves’ ability to speak well in public and encouraged him to pursue a career as a radio announcer. Rivera Nieves graduated from Central High School in Santurce, another San Juan suburb. Rivera Nieves worked as an announcer at WAPA-Radio from his late teens until 1976, and he soon began working at Canal 4 as a show host, television journalist, and announcer in a number of that television channel’s shows. Sportscaster Junior Abrams informed Rivera Nieves that WKAQ-TV (“canal 2”) was planning a news show. Both of them went through auditions and were hired. Rivera Nieves joined Abrams and Anibal Gonzalez Irizarry, Sylvia Gomez, Raul Quiones (who had previously been his newscast mate at Canal 4), and others on Telemundo’s television news show, “Telenoticias” (then known as “Telenoticias en Accion”). Rivera Nieves was promoted to one of the show’s anchormen in 1986, a position he has held ever since.
