She is most known for her appearances as Harriette Baines Winslow on the ABC/CBS sitcom Family Matters (1989–1998), which she originated on the series Perfect Strangers. Payton voiced Suga Mama Proud (Penny Proud’s paternal grandmother) on Disney Channel’s animated series The Proud Family from 2001 to 2005, and repeated the character in the 2005 TV Movie The Proud Family Movie and on Disney+’s reboot The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. In 2005, she was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for her performance. During season two of Will & Grace (1999-2000), Payton appeared as the personal assistant to Gregory Hines’ character, Ben Doucette (Will Truman’s boss).

Payton’s big break came in 1987 when she was cast as Harriette Winslow, the lift operator on ABC’s Perfect Strangers. Because her performance was so well praised, she was given her own comedy, Family Matters, in 1989. She played a mother in a middle-class black household in Chicago, Illinois, reprising her Perfect Strangers character Harriette Winslow. Payton left Family Matters midway through its last season, last appearing on December 19, 1997, during rising tensions between her and star Jaleel White (the two nearly collided and had to be forcefully separated during Payton’s penultimate episode). Judyann Elder played Harriette Winslow in the remaining eight episodes of the show.

Payton was the third person voted off the Anne Robinson edition of The Weakest Link’s “TV Moms” episode in 2002. Payton and her kid participated on a Mother’s Day episode of Lingo in 2003, competing against fellow television mom Meredith Baxter and her daughter. Baxter and her daughter were victorious.
