She portrayed Vicky Hudson from 1991 to 1999. She also played Vicky’s twin, Marley Love, from 1991 until 1994, with return appearances in 1997 and 1998. Buchanan was nominated for two Daytime Emmys as a Lead Actress in 1996 and 1997. She joined As the World Turns on a short-term basis to play Vicky, who died in a plane crash in November 1999, but she remained to appear until 2001. In 2001, she began as Melissa Bedford, R. N. on General Hospital. From 2015 to 2016, Buchanan appeared on the soap opera The Young and the Restless, playing Elise Moxley, a member of the Genoa City social set.
