Ortiz began her acting career by performing in student films. She then attended Maggie Flanigan Studios for two years, where she learned the Meisner technique. In 2009, Ortiz auditioned for and was cast in the second season of VH1’s reality show Scream Queens, where she and nine other aspiring actresses battled in acting challenges for the chance to win a role in Saw 3D. The show first aired on August 2, 2010. Ortiz was named first runner-up at the season finale. Ortiz appeared in a photo featured in the Modern Family episode Yard Sale in 2012 as beauty pageant competitor Miss Galapa.
Ortiz was cast as a series regular in The After, produced by The X-Files creator Chris Carter, in 2013. The pilot, which debuted on Amazon Video in February 2014, got great praise and was picked up for a series. However, on January 5, 2015, Amazon Studios stated that the show would no longer be produced. Two months later, Ortiz was cast as the female lead in the Rosewood pilot, alongside Morris Chestnut. In May 2015, the pilot was approved for series. Rosewood premiered on Fox on September 23, 2015. In May 2017, the show was terminated after two seasons. Later that year, she appeared in an episode of the second season of the USA Network drama series Shooter.
