Abel began his career as a chartered accountant in the San Francisco office of PricewaterhouseCoopers. He joined CalEnergy, a geothermal electricity producer, in 1992. CalEnergy acquired MidAmerican Energy in 1999, adopting its name, and Berkshire Hathaway later that year acquired a controlling interest. MidAmerican was renamed Berkshire Hathaway Energy in 2014 after Abel became CEO in 2008.

Abel was appointed to Berkshire Hathaway’s board of directors and named vice chairman for non-insurance operations in January 2018.
