Ashley earned a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in Take Her, She’s Mine, and she also played Corie in Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park (1963) and Maggie in Tennessee Williams’ Cat in a Hot Tin Roof (1974). Both performances earned her Tony nominations. She starred on Broadway as Dr. Livingstone in Agnes of God (1982) and as Mattie Fae in August: Osage County during its initial Broadway run. Over the course of five decades, she has appeared in significant movie pictures, including early appearances in The Carpetbaggers (1964), Ship of Fools (1965), and The Third Day (1965).

She first appeared alongside Burt Reynolds in a 1969 season episode of Love, American Style, then in the 1981 film Paternity, as a guest star in his television series B.L. Stryker in 1989, and finally as Aunt Frieda Evans in his final television series, Evening Shade, from 1990 to 1994.
