After being hired to join the Kennedy Center/Juilliard School Acting Company, she relocated to Manhattan. She has appeared in Off-Broadway productions of City Boys at the Jewish Rep and Pieces of Eight at The Public Theatre. She was also in The Cradle Will Rock, The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Pericles, as well as touring in The Bat, Grease, and I Oughta Be in Pictures. Following her daytime television stint in New York City on Guiding Light, Matthews moved into primetime television on Peter Boyle’s ABC comedy series Joe Bash (1986), playing streetwalker Lorna. After six episodes, it was canceled. In 1988, she co-starred in the CBS sitcom Eisenhower and Lutz with Scott Bakula and Patricia Richardson for one season.
She and Richardson went on to co-star on the NBC sitcom FM (1989-1990) with Robert Hays, and she secured a lead role on the ABC sitcom Laurie Hill in 1992. Matthews won a female main role alongside Harry Anderson in the CBS sitcom Dave’s World in 1993; the series aired from 1993 to 1997. Matthews re-joined Bakula in a major role on the two-part miniseries The Invaders in 1995; the two had previously collaborated on the 1992 episode “Roberto!” of his series Quantum Leap. Matthews has been in a variety of television shows, including Murphy Brown, From the Earth to the Moon, Diagnosis: Murder, Strong Medicine, Cold Case, Nip/Tuck, Castle, and The Shield. In 2001, she joined the cast of ABC soap opera General Hospital playing Janine Matthews. She was regular cast member from October 29, 2001, to June 5, 2003.
