David Reyne Career

Reyne, the younger brother of lead singer James, continued as a drummer when Clutch Cargo changed its name to Australian Crawl in 1978. He played this role for ten months before stepping down to further his education in acting. He went on to be the vocalist for Chantoozies (1986–90) and Cats Under Pressure (1984). For Cats Under Pressure, Reyne co-wrote “Let Me Be” and “Polar Notch,” with Simon Hussey; Daryl Braithwaite covered the latter. Reyne also sang backing vocals for Chantoozies. The covers of Stephen Stills’ “Love the One You’re With,” John Kongos’ “He’s Gonna Step on You Again,” and Redbone’s “Witch Queen” were the Chantoozies’ most popular songs. Tottie Goldsmith, Eve von Bibra, and Ally Fowler were among the other members.

Reyne made his acting debut in the 1983 film Skin Deep, in a supporting role. He won the 1984 Best New Talent Logie at the TV Week Logie Awards in April 1985 for his work in the ABC series Sweet and Sour as Martin Kabel. Reyne shared the role of guitarist and vocalist Kabel on “The Takeaways” with Australian pop music band Deckchairs Overboard’s John Clifforth, who sang on screen. In 1985, Reyne reprised his role as Detective Vince Bailey on the Nine Network soap opera Possession. In the final two seasons of the Australian drama series The Flying Doctors, Reyne also played the lothario Dr. Guy Reid. Reyne played Dale Madden in a guest appearance on Neighbours in 2012. He only made an appearance in one episode, though.

Reyne has also presented television shows. He and Tracy Grimshaw hosted Midday for a short time in 1995. Between 1992 and 2006, and again since 2010, he was a reporter for the travel show Getaway. Reyne signed a contract with Network Ten to co-host the new morning show 9am with David and Kim with Kim Watkins after leaving Getaway at the end of 2005. The show debuted on January 30, 2006, and ran until the end of 2009.
