David Goerlitz Career

Goerlitz began modeling at the age of 29, and following a callback in 1980, he was hired as the “Winston Man” by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco. Goerlitz appeared in 42 advertisements for Winston cigarettes, notably the ‘Search and Rescue’ ad campaign, for which he was America’s most photographed person in cigarette ads. The marketing campaign propelled Winston cigarettes from number four to number two in global sales. Goerlitz’s brother was diagnosed with cancer in 1988, prompting him to publicly stop smoking during the ‘Great American Smokeout’ in November of that year. At this moment, he became involved in the anti-smoking movement, touring schools and colleges around the world. He told his experience across North America, Taiwan, Japan, and Sweden.

Goerlitz received a medal of honor from the World Health Organization in 1989, and he has also collaborated with the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, and the American Heart Association. Goerlitz and Gary LaForestin collaborated on a book called “Before The Smokescreen” that was released by Gladstone Publishing. The book describes how and why Goerlitz began his 23-year tobacco addiction, which involved three and a half packs each day. In addition, he provides a behind-the-scenes look at how his tobacco business advertisements were created, as well as an overview of his award-winning youth education program. Goerlitz became disillusioned with the anti-smoking campaign and publicly expressed his opinions on the anti-smoking industry, the government, and the tobacco business.

He has been campaigning for tobacco damage reduction through the use of vaping goods in the media since 2007, providing interviews on a variety of internet venues. In 2016, Goerlitz appeared in the award-winning documentary film A Billion Lives, directed and narrated by Aaron Biebert and distributed by Attention Era Media.
