Dave Ward Career

Ward began working at KGKB radio while attending Tyler Junior College (class of 1960). Three years later, he joined WACO-FM as a staff broadcaster. Ward went on to become the first full-time reporter for KNUZ radio in Houston in 1963. In 1966, he was hired on the spot by KTRK-TV: He was employed as an on-the-street reporter and photographer in November 1966, and in 1967 he was appointed to anchor KTRK’s 7 a.m. newscast. A year later, he was promoted to co-anchor of the daily newscasts at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., respectively. Ward said in December 2014 that he was departing the weeknight 10 p.m. show but would continue to co-anchor the weekday 6 p.m. program with Gina Gaston.

Ward was honored by the Guinness Book of World Records in June 2016 for holding the record for the longest stay of any news anchor at the same station in the same market. Ward stated on August 4, 2016, during the 6 p.m. newscast that he will be departing KTRK at the end of the year. Shortly after, Ward told the Houston Chronicle that he was leaving against his will and did not want to retire, despite repeated falls in the newsroom that had left his health erratic. Finally, the station and Ward agreed not to renew his contract, and he would leave in December 2016.  Prior to that date, another health issue pushed back his departure.

Ward, a personal acquaintance of Marvin Zindler, assisted Zindler in obtaining his work at Channel 13, persuading the station to hire him after Zindler was discharged from his job with the sheriff’s department. Ward’s memoir “Good Evening, Friends” was published in May 2019. The title refers to the salutation he used to open each newscast at KTRK.[8] The City of Houston recognized Ward’s 50 years at KTRK with an honorary street sign outside the ABC 13 studios. The marker reads, “Honorary Dave Ward Place.” In addition to his television and radio careers, he helped develop Houston Crime Stoppers, is currently President of the local Easter Seals Society, and chairs the Houston Business Council’s Public Affairs Advisory Board.
