Fowler attended American University from 1976 to 1977 before leaving to become an announcer for the San Antonio Dodgers. In 1980, he joined KSAT-TV in San Antonio as a weekend sports anchor and swiftly rose to the position of sports director. In 1984, he relocated to New York City to pursue his acting career. He appears in Sylvester Stallone’s film Cobra and the HBO series First and Ten.

Unable to make ends meet as an actor, Fowler grabbed a part-time work at St. Louis’ KMOX-TV station.He took over as sports anchor for WTTG-TV’s The Ten O’Clock News in 1986, succeeding Bernie Smilovitz. Following a time at Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV, Fowler joined KCAL-TV in Los Angeles. He played Bob Clifton, a sportscaster, in two episodes of Coach during his time there.

He also hosted Tuesday Night Muscle, a monthly women’s bodybuilding event, on ESPN. In 1992, he presented Knights and Warriors, a syndicated American Gladiators-style show produced by Welk Entertainment Group. Fowler began working for the World Wrestling Federation in 1993, replacing interviewer Gene Okerlund. He made his debut at that year’s SummerSlam pay-per-view before leaving the company a few months later. Maximum Drive debuted on The Family Channel in 1994, hosted by Fowler. Since then, he’s worked as an infomercial pitchman, hawking products like the Lizard Hose and the Omelette Express, as well as hosting ShopHQ programs.
