Danai Gurira is a Zimbabwean-American actress and playwright. She is best known for her roles as Michonne on AMC’s horror drama The Walking Dead and as Okoye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero films Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Gurira was born to Josephine Gurira, a college librarian, and Roger Gurira, a tenured professor in Grinnell College’s Department of Chemistry. Her parents immigrated to the United States from Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, in 1964. She is the youngest of four siblings, with two sisters, Shingai and Choni, and a brother, Tare, who works as a chiropractor. Gurira lived in Grinnell until December 1983, when she and her family moved back to Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital after Robert Mugabe took power in 1979. Gurira is a Christian who lives in Los Angeles but frequently visits New York City. She considers herself a Zimbabwean American. She is fluent in four languages: French, Shona, basic Xhosa, and English, and she maintains her physical fitness through Pilates and cross-training.

She appeared as Michonne Grimes in AMC’s The Walking Dead and the Rick & Michonne spin-off. Michonne Grimes (neé Hawthorne) is a main character and survivor of the Walking Dead outbreak in AMC’s The Walking Dead. She withdrew into solitude after losing her boyfriend and toddler, perfecting her swordsmanship and becoming a dark and ruthless warrior. She quickly became a key member of the group as well as Rick’s right-hand woman, and the two eventually developed a more intimate relationship.

She played Okoye in Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and she will reprise the role in the upcoming Wakanda television series. Okoye was a Dora Milaje member who served alongside her king T’Challa and the Avengers in the aftermath of the Snap. She joined the Wakandans to help them during the Battle of Earth after the Blip in 2023, which resurrected all the lives claimed by Snap. Okoye survived the battle, but she was unable to prevent Thanos from completing the Infinity Gauntlet.
Danai Gurira Eclipsed
Gurira wrote the play Eclipsed. It is set in 2003 and tells the story of five Liberian women and their survival story near the end of the Second Liberian Civil War. It was the first Broadway play to feature an all-black and female creative cast and team.
Eclipsed premiered at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, DC in 2009, and then moved to the Gate Theatre in London in April 2015, starring Letitia Wright. An American Off-Broadway production opened in October 2015 at The Public Theater to positive reviews and ran until November 2015. The following year, it was transferred to Broadway, where it premiered on March 6, 2016, at the John Golden Theatre. The show’s Broadway run ended on June 19, 2016.
