Williams continued to appear in guest roles on television after The Brady Bunch was cancelled in 1974. He also became involved in musical theater, touring with shows like Grease, The Sound of Music, Pippin, and West Side Story.
Williams made his Broadway debut in the musical Romance/Romance with Alison Fraser, who had been nominated for a Tony Award. When Scott Bakula left the production, Williams took over the lead male role in “Alfred/Sam.” Williams was able to take advantage of the stereotype of Greg Brady years later. He landed a role that was a departure from the Brady image amid a string of appearances in television and film that played up his well-known role as a teenager. In 1984, he was cast as the English con artist Hannibal, who worked with Holly Sutton Scorpio (Emma Samms) on the highly rated television show General Hospital.
