Conover is currently a member of the Writers Guild of America West board of directors. In 2012, Conover began working as a sketch comedy writer and performer for the comedy website and YouTube channel CollegeHumor, where he eventually created Adam Ruins Everything on TruTV. On September 29, 2015, the first episode of the TruTV show, which aims to reveal untold truths and dispel common misconceptions, premiered. Conover has stated that his character in the show is a comedic interpretation of the person he fears he was and/or still is.

Conover appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher on August 17, 2018. Conover appeared as a guest on The Joe Rogan Experience on April 17, 2019. In the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman, he has voiced several characters.

In 2019, he created the new Earwolf podcast Factually! and voiced the character “Big_Hairy_Stallion_69” on the Netflix series Tuca & Bertie. Conover has also hosted an American adaptation of the family game show The Crystal Maze for Nickelodeon since 2020. Conover made a cameo appearance as Adam Ruins Everything in The Eric Andre Show in November 2020. Before being beaten to death, his character appeared in the show’s opening sequence. Conover announced in December 2020 that Adam Ruins Everything would no longer be produced and that he was planning a new Netflix series about the federal government called The G Word with Adam Conover. On May 19, 2022, the show debuted on Netflix.

Conover is a member of the Writers Guild of America West board of directors and the 2023 WGA contract negotiating committee. The WGA contract negotiating committee failed to reach a satisfactory agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents Hollywood’s major film and television studios, resulting in a strike on May 1, 2023. Conover has been a vocal supporter of Nithya Raman, who ran against and defeated David Ryu for Los Angeles City Council. Conover, an activist for Housing First policies, performed stand-up comedy to raise funds for the campaign and canvassed in support of Raman.
