Cooper’s memoir, Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural World, was published by Random House in 2023. Cooper is currently employed at Health Science Communications as a senior biomedical editor. On May 16, 2022, National Geographic announced Cooper would host a show called Extraordinary Birder on their American TV channel, following species of birds from around the world. The series debuted on June 17, 2023. Cooper was the first openly gay writer and editor at Marvel. In the Starfleet Academy series, he introduced the first gay male character in Star Trek, Yoshi Mishima, who was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award in 1999.
Victoria Montesi, Marvel’s first openly lesbian character, was also introduced by him. as well as creating and writing Queer Nation: The Online Gay Comic. Cooper was also an associate editor for Alpha Flight #106, which featured the gay character Northstar.
