April Ryan Biography
April Ryan is an American journalist and author who is known for her career as a correspondent. April has been a White House correspondent since 1997. Other titles held by Ms. Ryan include being a political analyst for CNN and bureau chief for Washington, D.C., for American Urban Radio Networks. She was named the “Journalist of the Year” in May 2017 by the National Association of Black Journalists. As an author, she has written the books; Under Fire, At Mama’s Knee and The Presidency in Black and White. She is also a 2019 inductee into the Delta Sigma Theta sorority as a honorary member.

Having studied broadcast journalism from the Morgan State University, April has a B.S. degree and a 2017 honorary doctorate from the institution. From Claflin University, she got awarded another honorary doctorate. After completing her B.S. degree education, April joined the media field as a jazz disc jockey. With time, she became a reporter working with radio stations that include North Carolina A&T University and as a news director for WXYV-FM in Baltimore, Maryland.
She then joined the White House press corps in January 1997 working for the American Urban Radio Networks. As of 2020, April has covered four presidential administrations as a White House correspondent. She is a member of the National Press Club and has served on the board of the White House Correspondent’s Association, one of only three African Americans to be on the board.
