Later, he applies to and is accepted to Lehigh University, but a nagging ankle injury ends his pro football career, so he enlists in the United States Marine Corps to pay for his education.
Meanwhile, JJ’s on-again, off-again girlfriend Beth Mason enrolls at the University of Pennsylvania to be closer to JJ. JJ excels in boot camp and is sent to Vietnam. He and Beth are reunited in Hawaii while on leave, where they break up, but Beth soon discovers she is pregnant with JJ’s child and moves in with the Pryors.
An injured person JJ awakens in an American military hospital to learn of his impending child. He is recruited for a special, somewhat mysterious mission for the United States government. As Thanksgiving approaches, JJ is kidnapped by the Viet Cong. He and his sergeant manage to flee, but they are presumed missing in action (MIA). JJ returns home, works as a Marine recruiter, and experiences post-traumatic flashbacks. He marries Beth in a ceremony at the Pryor’s Catholic church. Gloria tricked Adam into killing Caroline so he could have more control over the money, leaving Gloria in charge of spending it. Caroline, who was trying to defend herself from the flash, was strangled by Adam. Doug Kersten, an undercover agent, discovered Caroline murdered at his ring, which he used to track down organized crime.
