Anthony Reed was born in Greenville, Mississippi. At 18 months old, Davidson was abandoned in the trash before being rescued by a white woman who eventually became his adoptive mother. After adopting him, his parents renamed him Thomas Davidson. He has two older white siblings named Michael and Beryle. By the age of five, he had moved with his family from Colorado to Wyoming to Oregon. His parents split when he was five years old, and his mother and children relocated to Washington, D.C. They later relocated to Wheaton, Maryland, the Rosemary Hills area in Silver Spring, and finally Takoma Park.

He was an original cast member of the sketch comedy TV show In Living Color, Mitchell on Between Brothers (1997–1999), Dexter on Malcolm & Eddie (1999–2000), Oscar Proud on The Proud Family (2001–2005) and its 2022 revival, Rushon in Booty Call (1997), Womack in Bamboozled (2000), and Cream Corn in Black Dynamite (2009) and its subsequent television series. In 2022, Davidson appeared on Storybound, reading from his book Living in Color: What’s Funny About Me. Davidson began his career as a stand-up comedian in 1984, when a childhood friend persuaded him to appear at The Penthouse strip club in Park View, Washington, DC. He proceeded to perform in numerous comedy clubs in the Washington Metropolitan area, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. He opened gigs for Patti LaBelle and Starpoint.
In 1987, he performed on WHMM’s fundraising telethon. Davidson won an amateur stand-up competition at the Apollo Theatre in 1987. Shortly thereafter, he relocated to North Hollywood, California, where he met Martin Lawrence, who resided in his building. He performed at the Comedy Store, where Robert Townsend heard about him and invited him to be the warm-up comedian for an HBO special. Following performances with Luther Vandross and Anita Baker, he performed on The Arsenio Hall Show.
