His first screen debut was in the 1976 film Deadbeat, where he played an elderly man. In 1987, he starred as the hitchhiker in the horror film Creepshow 2.[ Wright co-starred in the feature film Barbershop (2002) and the sequel Barbershop 2: Back in Business (2004) alongside Ice Cube. In 2002, he co-starred with Angela Bassett as her ex-lover in Sunshine State. Wright had a good working relationship with writer/director John Sayles, and he had previously starred in many films, including The Brother from Another Planet (1984), Matewan (1987), City of Hope (1991), Passion Fish (1992), and Honeydripper (2007).
