Hubert made her Broadway debut in 1981, in the ensemble of The First, a short-lived musical about Jackie Robinson, following her performance in the national tour of Dancin’. Hubert originated the character of Tantomile in the original Broadway production of Cats and understudied Grizabella and Demeter. She left Cats in April 1983 to appear in the national tour of Sophisticated Ladies, alongside Dee Dee Bridgewater and Gregg Burge. Hubert’s most well-known role is Aunt Viv in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Hubert’s character was recast as Daphne Maxwell Reid for the remainder of The Fresh Prince’s run after she was purportedly sacked by the show’s producers.
Hubert appeared as Chandler’s boss on an episode of Friends in 2002. She began her recurring role as Lisa Williamson, mother of attorney Evangeline Williamson, on One Life to Live in 2005. Her character has made sporadic appearances since then. She appeared as Michel Gerard’s mother in an episode of the CW series Gilmore Girls. She has appeared in episodes of All My Children, NYPD Blue, The Bernie Mac Show, and Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, among others. Hubert was cast as Yvonne on the daytime soap series General Hospital in November 2018, and she made her debut on December 7. In November 2020, Hubert starred in HBO Max’s The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion. Hubert appeared on FX’s Pose in season 3 as a family member of Billy Porter’s character, Pray Tell, alongside Jackée Harry and Anna Maria Horsford. In 2022, she appeared on The Ms. Pat Show as the title character’s mother-in-law, Jewell.
