He began his journalism career at KPRC in Houston, where he worked his way up from copyboy to news editor. In 1965 he joined ABCNEWS as a correspondent for the Network’s Atlanta bureau. He is a former ABC network television news correspondent who worked for the network from 1964 to 2002. He then became an ABC White House correspondent during the administrations of US Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. Later, Jarriel co-anchored ABC Evening News on Saturdays for two years before joining the network’s newsmagazine 20/20 as an investigative correspondent in 1979. He discussed the flaws in the American criminal justice system, wasteful expenditure by the United States Department of Defense, and transportation accidents on that show and in other hour-long films. He garnered ten Emmy nominations for his work.
Jarriel was the most frequent anchor of the midday ABC News Brief updates that aired during the era, as well as the 15-minute bulletins that ran late at night on Saturday and Sunday until they were abolished in 1991. He also filled in as an anchor on World News Tonight. In 2002, he announced his retirement from broadcasting. Jarriel, a veteran Washington correspondent for ABCNEWS, has been actively involved in covering national politics since arriving in Washington in 1968. He served as ABCNEWS White House correspondent from 1969 until the inauguration of Jimmy Carter.
