In 1990, he joined the BBC as a World Service Production Trainee and spent the next five years working as a producer, reporter, and part-time broadcaster. He was elevated to World Service Political Correspondent in 1997 after being named World Service Political Reporter in Westminster in 1995. He covered not only British politics but also events in Northern Ireland, such as the IRA ceasefire breaking down in 1996, civic turmoil over the Parades, and the Good Friday Agreement. He started working for the BBC’s domestic television and radio in 1999, including a term as the political correspondent for Today.

He also began presenting The World at One on occasion and contributing to the arts pages of the New Statesman magazine. Franks joined the BBC as a Foreign Correspondent in 2001. His first assignment was to Washington six months after the September 11th attacks. In March 2002, he began a five-year assignment as Europe Correspondent in Brussels. During the 2003 Iraq war, he reported from all over Europe, as well as from Iraq. His training for the London marathon in 2004 coincided with a month in Baghdad. During this time, he was also used as a guest presenter on the Today show. He was appointed BBC Middle East Correspondent in 2007, based in Jerusalem.

His departure speech, From Our Own Correspondent, received great notice because it addressed the relationship between his Judaism and his journalism.
