In October 2011, O’Donoghue succeeded Norman Smith as BBC Radio 4’s Chief Political Correspondent, principally reporting for the Today and PM programs. He broke the story in 2007 that new UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown was returning from vacation early to cope with a foot-and-mouth outbreak in Surrey. However, the article was submitted to June Kelly by BBC News at Ten deputy editor Daniel Pearl, resulting in an out-of-court five-figure award to O’Donoghue in 2008 for handicap discrimination. His first employment at the BBC was in a braille production department, where he was given the task of operating a photocopy. O’Donoghue began his career at the BBC as a young reporter on the Today program on BBC Radio 4, when he was once asked for a bungee jump.
He has worked for BBC News in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the United States throughout his career. In 2004, O’Donoghue became a political correspondent for the BBC, reporting on radio, television, and the internet. It was revealed at the 2014 BBC News Festival that O’Donoghue would be relocating to Washington, DC, as the BBC’s top North American political correspondent. Since then, he has covered US politics, including the administrations of Donald Trump and Joe Biden. He visited UK universities in the summer of 2014, in between assignments, to speak to journalism students about his experiences in the profession.
