In 1989, Leo became a founding member of the New York punk band Citizens Arrest.In the 1990s, Leo was a member of the bands Chisel, Puzzlehead, and the Sin-Eaters. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists were founded in 1999 in Washington, D.C. From 1999 until 2010, the group released six studio albums.Leo has also maintained a steady presence as a solo musician since the 1990s.
After touring as Mann’s backup act for several months, Leo and Aimee Mann founded The Both in early 2013.He and Mann started creating songs together, and in March 2013, they played their debut gig as the Both (initially with the hashtag #BOTH).Their self-titled debut album, The Both, came out in April 2014.
On September 8, 2017, Leo released his debut solo album, The Hanged Man. The album was inspired by several years of professional and personal challenges, including the death of a daughter in 2011 as a result of a late-term miscarriage that forced Leo’s wife into preterm birth.
For the 2019 animated television film Steven Universe: The Movie, Leo wrote the song “Independent Together” with Rebecca Sugar and Stemage. In the film, Leo played Steg, a mix between Steven Universe and Greg Universe. Leo performed “Independent Together” as Steg with Aimee Mann (who recreated her role as Opal from the Steven Universe television series) and voice actor Deedee Magno Hall (as Pearl).
