Sree Sreenivasan Career
From 1993 to 2013, Sreenivasan was a professor of professional practice at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. At Columbia, he taught classes on new media, web design, and social media in journalism, as well as media entrepreneurship. In succeeding years, as an adjunct professor, he led courses for professional journalists on advanced Internet and multimedia reporting.
Sreenivasan was named Dean of Students at the Journalism School in 2005, with responsibility for student-oriented programming. He got the David Eshelman Award for Outstanding Campus Advisor in 1998 as the former advisor of the school’s chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
He was named Dean of Student Affairs in 2008, with responsibility for admissions, student services, and career services at the university. Columbia University designated Sreenivasan its first Chief Digital Officer on July 11, 2012.
In August 2013, Sreenivasan was named Chief Digital Officer of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was in charge of 70 personnel across the institution in this position. Sreenivasan was a founding member of SAJA, the South Asian Journalists Association, an organization of over 1,000 South Asian journalists in the United States and Canada. He served as the organization’s inaugural president and continues to serve on its board of directors, in addition to editing and writing for SAJAforum, one of the most widely read South Asian news and analysis websites.
He was also nominated to “UNITY: Journalists of Colorseed “‘s a list of the century’s best 100 journalists. He was WABC-“Tech TV’s Guru” for six years before joining WNBC-TV as a technology correspondent in January 2007. Until January 2009, he appeared twice a week on-air and on WNBC.com. Sreenivasan assisted in the founding and development of DNAinfo.com, a hyper-local Manhattan-centric news venture founded by TD Ameritrade founder and Chicago Cubs owner Joe Ricketts, from 2009 to 2011. He’s written more than 50 business and technology articles for The New York Times and aired more than 40 episodes of his own CBS Radio podcast, the @SREE SHOW.
Sreenivasan made waves in May 2016 when she led a boycott of all-male panels, conferences, and events. He would later add that he would not attend any all-male panels to his pledge. He announced his departure from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2016 after three years as its chief digital officer, amidst the museum’s financial difficulties. Despite the fact that Met president Daniel Weiss dubbed Sreenivasan “a celebrity,” the museum was facing a $9 million to $10 million shortfall.
Due to the Met’s financial difficulties, Sreenivasan and several high-profile employees were let go, including Cynthia Round, senior vice president for marketing and external relations, and Susan Sellers, head of design. Sreenivasan oversaw the makeover of the Met’s website as well as the creation of a smartphone app. Sreenivasan was appointed chief digital officer of New York City by Mayor Bill de Blasio on August 1, 2016. On May 12, 2017, he stepped down from his position.
