Leal began her career as Dahlia Crede in the CBS daytime drama Guiding Light. She later joined the Broadway production of Rent. She was soon cast as Mimi in the San Francisco leg of Rent’s first national tour. Leal co-starred with Patrick Wilson and Jesse L. Martin in the original cast recording of the Off-Broadway musical Bright Lights, Big City in 1999. She also appeared in the Making Tracks cast recording in 2001. Leal appeared in the Fox prime-time television series Boston Public. She also appeared in the theatrical film Face the Music. She then had a recurring role as the wife of airport co-director Roger de Souza in the short-lived NBC series LAX.

She co-starred with Beyoncé Knowles, Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy, and Jamie Foxx in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls as Michelle Morris, Effie White’s replacement in the pop group The Dreams. In 2007, Leal starred in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? and this Christmas, she starred in Perry’s sequel, Why Did I Get Married Too? She also played Vanessa Lodge in the Hellcats television series, which was cancelled in 2011. Leal played a supporting role in the film 1982, which depicts a drug-addicted mother and a father’s struggle to protect his daughter. Leal appears as M’gann M’orzz (Megan in human form) in Supergirl seasons 2, 3, 5, and 6.
